We are a design firm that has been in practice for more than five decades, during which time we have assembled a team of talented individuals that bring a depth of knowledge and experience. Our many achievements in architecture, urbanism, and sustainability have established a reputation for innovative research and design excellence.  

2022

BSN Architects joins the WalterFedy Family 

This partnership provides the deep marriage of technical expertise and innovative design approaches needed to address the next generation of design challenges. 

2021

Canada Green Building Award 

The prototype Laneway Housing project for the University of Toronto, built on Passive House framework, explored new responses to the dual housing and environmental crises. 

2020

Prix du XXe siècle – Butterfly Gardens 

“We see a building that has stood the test of time and was a forerunner in what we now understand as sustainable design.” – Jury Notes

2019

Setting New Standards in Building Performance 

The Rob and Cheryl McEwen Graduate Study and Research Building achieved a new level of building performance balanced with human wellness. “The fundamental idea of the building was to intertwine sociability and environmental sustainability into an integrated whole.” – Jon Neuert  

2011

RAIC Innovation Medal: Mission 2050 

“The agri-ecology campus is truly a visionary endeavour.  The concept of “total resource recovery” is an essential part of humanity’s environmental challenge this coming century…This is the serious business of saving the planet.” – Jury Notes

2007

RAIC Firm Award 

Awarded for a distinguished history of contributions to architecture, education, and community development in Canada and abroad. “The firm has built a unique portfolio that balances significant architectural works recognized for the enrichment of public life with critically acclaimed publications on design theory.”

2005

Pioneering Educational Design 

The first in a new generation of high-performance green schools, Toronto’s Thomas L. Wells Public School, set an entirely new standard, achieving the first LEED Silver certification. 

1993

Baird Sampson Neurt Architects 

Joining the firm in 1990 and becoming Principal in 1993, Jon Neurt brought a passion for environmental science and systems that supported a technical, holistic approach to design. 

1982

Baird Sampson Urban Design

After a sabbatical in Paris, Barry Sampson returned home to become a Principal, pioneering the firm’s approach to building performance. 

1976

Transforming Historic Toronto 

Invited to advise on the planning of the St. Lawrence neighbourhood, the resulting design guidelines informed one of Toronto’s great triumphs in urban redevelopment. 

1972

George Baird Architect and Associates

Balancing teaching, writing and building, George Baird was already well-established when he started his firm, located at 35 Britain Street.
